asics good will out KOYO

About time someone jumped into the arena with a ‘Really GOOD’ ASICS collaboration in 2014. So far, in my humble opinion, it’s been a very disappointing ASICS x (insert brand here) collaboration year. Everything has been boring, and ugly; shoes that had me plenty of times saying, ‘What The Fuck Is That?”. Well, except for the re-launch of the Sneaker Freaker ‘Alvin Purple’ and a couple of the BAIT collabs. Anyway, The Good Will Out came through nicely with this make-up and story behind it’s color-way dubbed, Koyo (Colorful leaves are to the Japanese autumn what cherry blossoms are to Spring. The viewing of autumn leaves has been a popular activity in Japan for centuries and today draws large numbers of travelers to famous koyo spots both in the mountains and in the cities)…

The TGWOs Gel Lyte V make-up adorns 3 shades of dark red throughout the shoe. Though it’s hard to notice in these photos, I’m sure in hand it’ll be a bit more visible. To make the story of KOYO come full circle, TGWO added yellow accents. This takes inspiration from fallen leaves and their yellow edges. They also added a nice rock grey 3M that compliments the overall CW. In the material department it’s upper is bonded by premium nubuck leather panels and a nice perforated vamp and quarter. Major accents come in the form of printed leaves on the ankle liner, what looks like molded leaves within the heel panel and 3 pairs of laces. Overall, very well executed.

2014 has been a weird, interesting and quite frankly, a fucking disappointment with SMU (special make-up) releases. I’m not just talking about ASICS either. Looking back a 2012-2013, you can see much better collaborative projects which had better appeal. However, 2014 has been a mind fuck when you track all the collaborative pieces; it’s actually one of those years where ASICS has had better general releases over their collaborations. So far, even ASICS frontman Ronnie Fieg has failed to deliver any make-ups that can combat his older releases. This also includes any of the CNCPTS, UBIQ, OFFSPRING, LILY BROWN, SNEAKER FREAKER (Melvin), HANON, etc shoes. I just personally haven’t seen any appeal from either one of those releases. We still haven’t even seen the Bodega collab, but that’s already looking a bit too colorful for my eyes. There are a few months to go, so lets see if anyone can catch up to what the Good Will Out produced here. They did a fantastic job of capturing the beauty and essence of the KOYO story. To me, that’s important and something I always look for. Especially when the viewer can relate to it and see the journey they tried to tell. Some people could care less for the story behind a color-way, but I think that personal touch from the brand carries the sense of satisfaction when it’s accomplished through the consumer. At the end of the day, the main goal from the brand/s is to satisfy the consumer with their product and have them react. Good Will Out did just that. Bravo!

The ASICS x Good Will Out Gel Lyte V “KOYO will release on October 18, 2014 exclusively at The Good Will Out in Cologne, Germany in a special packaging. After that you will be able to find it in select stockist around the world on October 25, 2014. Good luck to all including myself!
